In the summer, it is important to give the digestive system a boost. Agni (the digestive fire) is naturally low during this season as the body seeks to keep cool by dispersing heat. By keeping the digestion strong and healthy, the lymph channels stay clean and ready to aid when cold and flu season rolls around in the fall.

Nature provides lighter and easier-to-digest foods in this season. Summer fruits and vegetables play a role in detoxifying the liver and cleansing the digestive tract.  Here are three ways to cleanse and boost your digestion during summer:

Drink cooling detox tea

Boil six cups of water and add a teaspoon each of cumin, coriander and fennel seeds.Lower the heat and simmer for five minutes.

Keep bottled in a thermos flask for the day.

Strain and add a few leaves of fresh mint when ready to consume.

Switch to summer tastes

Transition from the pungent taste of spring to the sweet, bitter and astringent tastes of summer.

Enjoy asparagus, artichokes, beet greens, celery, chard, cucumbers, kale, collard greens, lettuce, fenugreek, summer squashes, okra, bitter gourd, green beans, watercress, and bell peppers.

Garnish your foods with coconut flakes.

Enjoy the season of fruits

While fruit salads are tempting, it is best to eat one fruit at a time.

Try to eat fruits as a snack or separate from your meals.

The sweet treats that summer has to offer include: watermelon, cantaloupe, stone fruit, tropical fruits, and berries!
