Ayurveda and Lifestyle Medicine support the proverb, 'you are what you eat'.
View discussion< Other PostsAyurveda says that you are not just what you eat, but also what you digest (physically, mentally, and spiritually).

In the Ayurvedic context, it is important to know about-
- Agni or the digestive fire transforms food into ojas or vitality. Poor digestion leads to ama or toxins and is considered the root cause of disease.
- Prakriti or individual constitution directs each of us toward different foods to balance our dosha. While vata is pacified with small and more frequent intake of cooked wholesome food, pitta feels satisfied with a larger and predictable helping of anti-inflammatory foods at least 3 times a day. Kapha, on the other hand thrives while consuming light foods a couple of times a day.
- Vikruti or imbalance guides us to turn to food as medicine. A sattvic or pure diet is encouraged for clarity, balance, and spiritual growth. Rajasic or stimulating foods and tamasic or dulling foods are sparingly consumed as an antidote.
- Daily and seasonal routines guide us to eat locally grown and fresh foods, ideally between 10:00 AM and 6:00 PM. Certain food combinations are not advised, such as consuming milk or fruits with your main meal.

Modern Lifestyle Medicine agrees with this proverb and places an emphasis on metabolic and behavioral health. Here are some tenets that have gained popularity in recent years-
- Whole, plant-based foods are encouraged. These minimally processed and nutrient-dense foods can prevent, manage, or reverse chronic diseases.
- Biomarkers reveal how food influences blood sugar, cholesterol, blood pressure, inflammation, etc.
- Behavioral patterns and choices are linked to emotions, habits, and stress. This has resulted in a nudge toward mindful consumption.
- Microbiome impacts the immune system, mental health, and metabolism. Diverse and seasonal foods are prescribed.
