Mother's Day honors mothers and mother figures for their love, sacrifices, and contributions to their families and society. It is an opportunity to express gratitude and love to those who have played a mothering role in our lives.

Vedic wisdom provides holistic insight into the role of mothering (caregiving) & being mothered (nurtured / self-care). According to the Vedas, mothering is revered as a sacred duty. The Vedas emphasize the interconnectedness of body, mind, and spirit, toward cultivating 'mothering' qualities. The following were considered 'mothers' and upheld for their nurturing ways:

ātma-mātā- one's own mother.

‍guroḥ-patnī- the wife of the guru.

brāhmaṇi- the wife of a brāhmaṇa.

rāja-patnikā- the wife of a king.

dhenuḥ- the cow.

dhātrī- the nurse.

pṛithvī- the earth.
